This parable is part of a series of parables found in Matthew 13 in which Jesus revealed the “mysteries of the kingdom of heaven”. That is to say, that our Lord made known the nature of the kingdom in this age, truths that had not previously been revealed in the Scripture. There is much in these teachings that was surprising to Jesus’ followers.
